Being a doctor like Arnaldo Trabucco takes years of education and on-the-job training in some of the most stressful, challenging environments. Many people grow up wanting to be doctors, but few people make it through medical school and the many hours of necessary clinical training to end up at a hospital or their own private practice. Here are the steps to becoming a doctor:
- Earn a Bachelor’s degree. Before you can attend medical school, you have to earn a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university or college. While many students enter undergraduate programs with the knowledge that they want to be doctors someday, they can take pre-medical studies to prepare them for medical school. You don’t have to major in pre-med, but you will need education in basic science, mathematics, and some anatomy.
- Go to medical school. This is where many would-be doctors drop out. Medical school is four years for most fields. To get into medical school, students have to get excellent grades in their undergraduate studies and score well on the medical school entrance exam. The first two years of medical school, as Dr. Arnaldo Trabucco knows, is intensive classroom instruction and the final two years are labs and hands-on learning opportunities.
- Get a residency. Residencies are where doctors fresh out of medical school can begin to specialize and learn from established doctors in their chosen fields at a hospital or clinic.
Arnaldo Trabucco earned his medical degree and went on to contribute much to the urology field over his nearly 30-year career.
